Christening Photographer Birmingham: Evie

On Sunday I was the christening photographer for Evie’s Christening at the Genuine Greek Orthodox Church, on Station Road in Erdington, Birmingham. It was a fascinating event and I felt very privileged to attend and record for posterity. The church has the most beautiful interior with stunning icons and ornate brass chandeliers. Around 50 friends and family members were in attendance. As it was a Greek Orthodox christening Evie was given a full immersion triple baptism. Inevitably there were a few tears! The priest held his hand over the baby’s nose and mouth and it was all over very quickly. I’m sure Evie was grateful for the water being warm! They actually have a full size font in the church for full immersion adult baptisms.

The service, which lasted for about an hour and a half and almost entirely in Greek, followed various stages such as performing the exorcism, triple immersion baptism, annointing with oil, lighting of candles and cutting of the baby’s hair. The air was thick with incense – I found it all very moving.
